How to replace broken basin spout?

Basin spout broke off, likely due to corrosion. There is a hex nut left on the wall as can be seen in the pictures.

My questions are:

1: Can I remove the hex nut left on or is it attached to something further behind the wall?

2: Should I shut off water mains before I remove this? There doesn’t seem to be shut off valves anywhere around the sink.

Before attempting any work on taps or spouts, it’s always best to turn off your water at the mains to isolate the property, especially if there aren’t any shut-off valves under the sink. The hex nut you’re seeing is part of the broken spout assembly. It can be removed from the wall, which will release the cover flange sitting against the wall and expose a separate threaded section protruding from the wall itself. A replacement spout can then be screwed directly onto this thread. When fitting the new spout, thread tape may be needed to ensure a proper seal on the connection. Just keep in mind that, depending on where you are, replacing a spout may be considered plumbing work, so it could require the services of a licensed plumber to stay compliant with local regulations.
