How to replace grout in shower recess?

Hello and thanks in advance

There is a deep crevice where some grout has come away (Where is it? I never saw it come loose) in my shower recess. See part outlined in blue in photo. It is approx 25mm down until a skewer hits ‘floor’ underneath so quite deep. There are also a few cracks and gaping as shown in the other photo. There is no evidence of water penetration in terms of any loose tiles or any damage to the ceiling in the roof below. Is this something I can address myself or should I get a pro/tiler. I also want to replace the silicon around the edges of the screen but that is different research/photos. I only mention it because maybe it would be better to get a pro in to do the lot. Thanks for any advice

Hello @Coolaholigah,

For a quick repair job, I suggest using Dunlop 800g Ready-To-Go Coloured Grout - White. Make sure to remove any loose or old grout then simply squeeze the grout into the gap and wipe away clean with a sponge.

If you have a second shower, I suggest using that instead of this one for at least two days. When the grout has cured, you can begin using it again. Make sure to also keep the shower door open to promote air circulation.

In regards to the silicone, I suggest using Trojan Safety Scraper to remove the old silicone and using Selleys 300g White Wet Area Waterproof Silicone Sealant to replace the old seal.

do I need to fill some of the 25mm depth with something before using the grout? That just seems very deep for grout.

Also, with the small cracks and gaps in other areas shown in the other photo, do I need to do something about them to prevent consequential damage or are they likely to just be cosmetic?

I suggest pouring a little bit of Earl's Concremate into the crack, but you need to make sure to leave some space for the grout. I suggest mixing the small quantity of Concremate into a separate container and making it semi slurry so that it slides down into the gap. Make sure to give the Concremate enough time to cure before you apply the grout.

As for the cracks and gaps, you'll need to clean them out using the tool I suggested. This type of repair is not long term, and you might need to do it again in a year or two. If you are looking for a long-term fix, you'll need to remove all the grout and re-grout your shower.
