How to replace old-style tap handles?

I'm trying to change over my very old tap handles and I've come up against this (see photo) and taps I've selected don't fit. Does that white bit come off? It's really tight on the spindle and feels like it's meant to be there. I don't want to change the whole thing if I do not have to.

Re: Old Style Tap Handles

Hello @GavinLynch

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your tap handles.

The item you are looking at is called a tap handle thermal insulator. I suggest using a Craftright 250mm Multi Grip Pliers to pull the plastic insulator off the spindle. If the tool does not work, I suggest trying the Haron Tap Handle Puller. There should be enough plastic material for the clamps to hold onto and to pull it out. Your last option is to use a hack saw and cut the plastic insulator in half. A standard generic handle replacement from Bunnings such as the Shaw & Mason Clear Universal Multi Fit Tap Handles will contain various types of insulators. You can then test and see which one will fit onto your spindle.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric
