How to replace worn out grout in a shower?

Hi everyone,

I replaced some grout in my shower about a year ago, and it's now falling out.

What did I do wrong?

I need to redo again and don't want to make the same mistake again.

I need advice please on method, and products to use.

I'm sorry to hear your grout hasn't lived up to expectations.

If your shower grout is falling out after just a year, there are a few possible reasons. One of the most common issues is inadequate surface preparation.

If the grout joints weren’t properly cleaned of old grout, soap scum, or dust, the new grout may not have adhered well. This time, you must give the grout lines a really good clean to ensure all loose material is removed. Use a small brush, like a toothbrush or Grout Brush, to agitate any materials left in the grout lines, then use a vacuum cleaner to remove them. After loose material is removed, give them a scrub with your brush and some soapy water and wipe with a cloth.

Another potential problem is that if the grout mixture was too watery or not mixed thoroughly, it could have weakened over time. Using a premixed grout like this Dunlop 1.5kg Flexible Coloured Grout can eliminate issues that are possible with mixing powdered grout with water.

When applying the grout, give it a good stir before applying so that it is smooth. Press the grout firmly into the joints using a Grout Float, making sure all gaps are completely filled. Wipe off any excess with a damp sponge before it dries too hard.

Allow the grout to cure properly by keeping the shower dry for at least 24 to 48 hours. Once cured, apply a high-quality grout sealer to enhance longevity and water resistance.
