How to stop washing machine water outlet leaking?

Can someone tell me why the water coming out of the washing machine is leaking out of the little spout on the left? Is this supposed to be open? Do I need to get a lid? Thank you!

Re: How to stop washing machine water outlet leaking?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, @sithyatawatta. It’s fantastic to have you join us and many thanks for your question about your washing machine outlet.

It looks like your washing machine is currently draining into the top waste outlet, but the small spout further down on the trap—called a spigot—was also used by the previous occupant to connect their washing machine. That spigot has been drilled out to allow water to pass through, and now that it’s no longer being used, it needs to be capped off. Otherwise, you’ll get water and foam leaking out just as you’ve shown in your photo.

You can fix this easily by using a dishwasher outlet cap. It simply pushes onto the spigot and tightens with a small screw to form a watertight seal. Once installed, that should prevent any further leaks from that point.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
