Laundry reno inspired by concrete trough

This laundry project was inspired by my Nannas old concrete laundry trough, we sourced the exact same trough that captured the same charm. We used Bunnings Kaboodle raw board range for cabinetry and customised a 600 cabinet unit and used two 300 doors to fit the sink perfectly.

We cut down the two doors and glued 3mm MDF strips to create the shaker style look, then sanded smooth. the cabinetry was hand painted, finished with Kaboodle american oak bench top and VJ panelling on the back wall. Now it's a hardworking space filled with heart and history.

Steps

Step 1

Planned the layout and took measurements.

we used the kaboodle planner for this  to test the cabinetry and see what would work best.laundry design online.jpg

Step 2

Assembled the flat pack-

we built the cabinetry ourselves and used a 600 units for the sink , but held off fully assembling them so we could modify them to fit.cabintry laundry ...jpg

Step 3

I will add the vj panelling was installed when flooring and watering proofing was invj panelling.jpgstalled..

Step 4

created the DIY shaker style doors-

we cut the tops off these doors for them to fit, then Cut 3mm MDF into stripes the glues them on top of the existing door to mimic around the shaker style doors. once glued we sanded and smoothes the edges. we customised a 600 cabinet unit and used two 300 doors so the sink would fit perfectly.. this was the best photo explain this I have.custom 600 cabinet.jpgmdf door snaded.jpgmdf picture.jpg.

Step 5

installed the oak timber bench top, oiled it and installed concrete trough...

we installed the bench top , oiled sanded and oiled and then installed the concrete extremely heavy concrete trough .trough and benchtop.jpgtrough and benchtop 1.jpg

Step 6

The plumbing was fitted off, and then we primed and painted the cabinetry.. Using a bonding primer and then two coats of dulux natural white and doing a light sand between each coat.. resulting in a smooth finish..before paint trough.jpgfinished trough.jpglaundry.jpg

Re: Laundry reno inspired by concrete trough

Hello @PaulineHawker

I absolutely love the concrete trough! A timeless reminder of how some materials withstand the test of time. The combination of the old and new plus, the natural timber benchtop gives the laundry such a retro feel. I would definitely love to have this in my home.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful laundry makeover.

Eric

Re: Laundry Inspired by Nanna's concrete trough - budget friendly DIY

Hi @PaulineHawker , looks fantastic, I remember my mums original laundry had one of these concrete sinks.
did you need to seal the sink to waterproof it, I remember my mums sink had a wax type finish, although it could have been Velvet soap bar coated from many years of use. Well done.

@PaulineHawker @PaulineHawker Your laundry looks gorgeous! Simple, timeless and home-y.  Can I ask which paint colour was used on the VJ Panelling?

Used dulux natural white @teganavis

Re: Laundry reno inspired by concrete trough

Thanks Pauline. I was'nt sure if you used the same colour on panels as cabinetry, as the panels appear to be a different colour in some of your photos. Must be the lighting 😊 Beautiful work!
