Should I get shower base siliconed?

IMG_1504.jpeg

I recently had my shower renovated and the builder did not use silicone between the poly marble shower base and the tiles. He said this was unnecessary due to the lip and waterproofing. Other people have said there should be silicone there. Is this usual?

Re: Should I get shower base siliconed?

Hello @MadWorld

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your shower base.

Based on the majority of shower bases I've seen, all of them had silicone sealant placed between the tile and tray. Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Nailbag for their opinion regarding this installation. If there was choice between having a silicone seal or not, I would choose having a seal as it is an extra layer of protection.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: Should I get shower base siliconed?

Afternoon @MadWorld

When I have looked at the diagrams of how the tiles are laid and the edge on the shower base, in reality "Does it need the silicone?" as the water cannot flow back up over the edge of the shower base.

For asthetic reasons and personal preference I would say yes I would ask for it to be done, but "shrug" I think it comes down to opinion of what you want. No grout so would be easier to clean? Verse silastic that you have to clean.

Re: Should I get shower base siliconed?

Hi @MadWorld

Your builder must be one of the very few who thinks thats an appropriate finish. 100% it should be siliconed. If not just for a neat finish, moist debris will get build up within the gap causing mould.
