What's the best way to add another toilet?

Hi Everyone, We are planning to renovate the bathroom, toilet and laundry section of our house. As an outcome, we are looking to have an en-suite with bathtub, washbasin and toilet and another one with shower, washbasin and toilet. What's the best way to do that given the current layout?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your toilet renovation.

I suggest having a quick look at this guide - How to plan a bathroom renovation by @Adam_W and How to plan a laundry renovation by @Adam_W.

If you're planning to move the toilet suite into the ensuite, I suggest some structural changes. I propose removing the existing walls and create a central wall between the laundry and the bathroom. This will also involve repositioning the doors, which may mean modifying or even removing part of the linen cupboard to make space. The good news is that this can open up enough room in the laundry for a new shower, toilet, and vanity, while still leaving space for your washing machine and dryer.

For the ensuite, the shower will need to be shifted slightly to create enough space for the toilet. Ideally, the toilet should be positioned against the exterior wall, where the current plumbing is located, to avoid excessive pipework. This approach will reduce the need for extensive plumbing changes, keeping the overall cost and complexity down. Additionally, if the exterior exit in the laundry is being closed off, this could be an ideal spot for the new toilet, ensuring the outlet pipe is close to the existing plumbing.

Hi @goswami_ketaki

It's a challenging small space to turn 3 spaces into 4 while still complying with minimum spacings. Are you prepared to loose the hallway linen cupboard and what appears to be a a large void between the laundry and hall? I assume it's more storage just not showing the doors.

Hi @Nailbag , yes definitely okay with both of that. In fact, we're okay with doing away with the linen cupboard in the laundry as well and would rather have the existing single toilet incorporated as part of one of the bathrooms. What approach would you suggest?

Im heading along the same lines as @EricL and @Nailbag in thinking of loosing the linen cupboards, or at least changing them dramatically.

Yellow = Bath + Basin and then toilet along that outside wall.
Red = Shower + toilet and hand basin (area could be shrunk maybe to give a thin linen cupboard from the new laundry.) door opens next to the old entrance corridor to the toilet.

Blue = New laundry with new door opening. The linen cupboard is halved (now only right hand side next to new door.

This is supposing you are on a raised floor for easy acess to plumbing and and ability to add to existing.

I am also supposing the walls removed ar non structual.

If you have a solid concrete floor then that will make things a tad more difficult with a few mor ethings to figure out. Is this a ground floor or second floor?

Not to scale, but it's a start. You just need to allow ideally 800-900mm for toilet widths, you can go narrower than standard 820mm door opening down to 720mm. Then you want to keep the shower at 900mm x 900mm. Your walls will be 110mm total widths less 19mm either sides for skirting.

I'm assuming your on a slab, so there is going to be some trench cutting for the new toilet and possible the shower, No big deal since your ripping everything out anyway.

What you need to do is plan it with your builder that you have at least a working toilet to start with. Then take 2-3 weeks holiday, while its completed as you will have nothing operating
