We'd like to clad a portion of our ensuite with timber. A sauna effect would be ideal, but it won't be used as a proper sauna, but shoudl be suitable for the damp ensuite. Sauna timber seems overly expensive for our project, though it would be ideal. The wall is curved (approx 5m x 2m) so the timber panels would need to flex or be fairly narrow strips (e.g. 65mm) so they can take the curve. We prefer a more flat look than the stripe. Could a regular timber work if it was treated properly (oak?) I don't think pine would look ideal, but open to all suggestions.
Thanks,
Geoff
Hi @geoffr,
If you’re planning to use bare timber in an ensuite, it’s really important to keep in mind that the constant damp and steam will take its toll. Any timber exposed in this kind of environment will need to be heavily sealed or oiled to stop it from absorbing moisture and deteriorating. That’s one of the reasons cedar is the go-to choice for saunas as it naturally resists moisture, decay and warping, and it also has a pleasant aroma that enhances the “spa” feel. Other timbers like oak could work if properly treated, but they will require regular maintenance to ensure the finish remains intact and moisture doesn’t creep in. You might like to speak with our Special Order team to discuss whether Cedar or other hardwoods are available in thin boards. We typically keep 65mm Tasmanian Oak in-store.
Since you’ve got a curved wall and want something that looks flatter and less stripy than narrow battens, you might like to consider an alternative product designed specifically for these situations. One option is the QuickBoard 300 x 9mm 2.7m Cedar PVC VJ Wall and Ceiling Lining Board (2 Pack). It has the look of cedar but is made from PVC, so it won’t swell, warp or rot in a damp ensuite. It’s also easy to work with, and once installed, it provides that warm timber-like appearance without the ongoing maintenance of natural wood. Depending on how tight the curve of your wall is, you may need to test the material first to see if it will bend and conform properly.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks Mitchell, is this available in narrower strips, say 70mm, for a more shiplap effect?
What about Meranti? https://www.bunnings.com.au/porta-41x12mm-2-7m-dar-rectangle-meranti_p0386967
A moulding like this could work, if available in cedar?... https://www.bunnings.com.au/65-x-19mm-1-8m-moulding-tasmanian-oak-single-bevel-select-1-8m_p0070025

Unfortunately, not @geoffr. It only comes in one profile. Though the 300mm board has a V-groove through the middle, which imitates two 150mm boards.
Timbers like Cedar would be a Special Order item, so I'd encourage you to speak with the team in-store. Depending on your location and timber suppliers in your area, there's a possibility of that profile being available in cedar.
