What to do when tap spindles aren't long enough?

What to do when tap spindles aren't long enough?

Hi,

Just wondering what to do when the cover plate of the tap can't go on because the spindle with the thread isn't long enough? (I may be using the wrong words sorry, hopefully the photos help!)

I thought I had to get a spindle extension thing (as in photos) but these all make the cover plate sit too far out!

Should I be using something else, or do I just need to keep searching for the right size?

Thanks!

I had the same problem by reading the posts I managed to fix my problem I used the PVC spindle extender I had to cut about a quarter of an inch of them now the spindle covers are flush against the tiles thank you very much for the information I always use Bunnings for all my purchases for home repairs.

Re: What to do when tap spindles aren't long enough

Not sure whether my Question has been answered or not. I bought some ceramic taps for an old house with old plumbing. It seems the distance between where the spindle screws in and the seat in the pipe is much longer then standard. The house was built in 1968 .The taps I bought were:

Are there taps I can buy with the correct length (in pipe) spindle or are there extenders that extend in the pipe?

From this thread I see I should have measured everything, but old tap and spindle is back in place currently. Does a spindle extender work in my case and can it be estimated what one I need?

Thanks!

Hi @CeramicSpindle,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

I can't say I'm 100% certain about the best way to address this issue, and I'd like to confirm with my colleague @EricL, who is much more experienced in this area.

Please bear with us, he should be online tomorrow afternoon to assist.

Re: What to do when tap spindles aren't long enough

Hello @CeramicSpindle

Thank you for your patience and for sharing your picture of the spindles. Your old spindle which is called a deep-seated spindle is a classic configuration which was quite common back in the 70's. I'm sorry, but the store currently does not carry deep seated ceramic spindles. We do however have the Shaw & Mason Chrome Deep Seat Basin Spindle if you are after a standard upgrade.

If you look closely, you'll see that the threaded section of the ceramic spindle is quite low, and the body itself is short. This will tell you that they are not compatible with each other. In regards to your question about spindle extenders, these devices are only compatible with short body spindle bases. My only other suggestion is to get a plumber to upgrade the entire assembly to the short type of spindle bases.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Re: What to do when tap spindles aren't long enough

Thanks very much to both of you for replying, The ceramic is needed for an elderly person who has trouble with turning the taps so I think we'll have to get the plumber in. Both been very helpful to the extent I don't need to ask anymore questions

Thankyou again! (Such a good idea this board)
