Where to start on renovating bathroom?

I have 2 weeks before I need to move into this property, We've run out of funds to hire a professional so we need to waterproof and mud base before tiling.

What do I need and what do I do first?

Is it waterproof then mudbase then waterproof again?

Re: Where to start on renovating bathroom?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @rhysr. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about renovating a bathroom.

If the bathroom floor hasn’t already been set up with proper falls towards the drain, your first step should be to screed the floor to create those falls. Once the screed has cured, seal up any gaps at the wall and floor junctions (for example, with polyurethane sealant), and then apply the waterproofing membrane over the entire floor and up the walls as required.

Alternatively, if it's just the shower area that needs fall, you can waterproof first and then screed in the fall.

Here's a helpful guide: How to waterproof a bathroom.

Just keep in mind that depending on where you’re located, you may need a licensed waterproofer to carry out the waterproofing and provide a compliance certificate for the work.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Where to start on renovating bathroom?

Hi @rhysr,

To screed and waterproof your bathroom floor, you'll need a few key materials and tools. For the screeding stage, pick up either a premixed screed product or create your own using a sand and cement blend (usually four parts sand to one part cement). You'll also need a bonding agent like BondCrete to help the screed adhere to the slab—this can be painted on or mixed into a slurry. To shape and level the floor, grab a straight edge or screed bar, along with a float, trowel, and spirit level or laser level to ensure your falls are correct. A mixing tub or large bucket will help you mix everything, and don’t forget safety gear like gloves and safety glasses.

Once the screed has fully cured, you can move onto waterproofing. Begin by sealing all wall and floor joints with a flexible polyurethane sealant like Sikaflex 11FC. Then, apply a suitable primer to the entire surface, following the instructions on the container. After priming, use a brush or roller to apply the liquid membrane in at least two coats, reinforcing the corners and joins with waterproofing tape. Clean the area thoroughly before starting, and use masking tape to keep edges neat during application.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

Mitchell
