Detailed planning helped with this successful 80s laundry and bathroom renovation that included wall removal, new internal and external doors, and new cabinetry.
This D.I.Y. project was the full modernisation of the original laundry Installed some 44 years ago. It was outdated and reflected a poor utilisation of space. The laundry was out of the 80's. The goal was to be effective and modern, whilst connecting to the outdoors, as this is a main thorough fare.
This included the complete removal of the back wall, Gyprock, new sliding internal and external doors, new storage cupboards alongside a new shower and toilet in the adjoining room. Tiling of all wet areas opening up the entrance onto the back deck improving access and increasing the property value. A huge success!
Planning: I used the Kaboodle online planner. I found the planner a great visual aid and very easy to use including a 3D view. This step provided a diagram for the engineer to review and a full bill of materials with an initial estimate.
A project plan and timeline was created in Excel to organise all tasks and ensure dependencies for each task were covered. Required trades were engaged: Tiler, electrician, plumber.
Task list and timeline
After planning and estimation, the demolition began.
After demolition the following tasks were completed: Supports for both sliding doors, electrical work, plumbing, installing both doors frames, timber noggin supports for the on-the-wall dryer to be hung, top storage cupboards, and inside wall tap fittings.
Installed Cavi-T-Bar from Bunnings using Proppa wall supports.
The right Gyprock was installed for dry and wet areas followed by several applications of water proofing purchased from Bunnings.
Next came the tiler who laid the cement screed. Let that sit for several days then began tiling walls and floor.
Tiling using Kaboodle plans
Begin to install Kaboodle floor cupboards and bench so that wall tiling can commence in all areas.
After tiling the following tasks were actioned and completed: Plumbing, electrical, architraves, painting and cupboard doors installed.
Then all the finishing items installed: Taps, toilet, vanity, shower taps and head, sinks, taps, towel racks and mirrors.
Finally enjoyment

The laundry is the forgotten room in many homes. It’s a purely functional space, most often visited simply to load or unload the washer or dryer, and with more crammed in than their designers ever intended. But with research and planning, you can turn your laundry into an efficient and even welcoming space. Check out our guide How to plan a laundry renovation by experienced community member Adam.
