The project

This is my biggest D.I.Y. project to date. An outdoor fire pit seating area. I made it from Besser Blocks and decorative breeze blocks.

I finished off with a Spotted Gum floating bench seat, decorative rocks and stepping pavers on the ground.

The post is to hang festoon lights up from our deck to the post and then to a tree.

When a tree fell last year, the fire pit stayed relatively intact, apart from a couple of smashed breeze blocks.

Lessons learned

Lessons learned from the project:

  • It’s best to take your time to make sure the project turns out exactly how you plan, especially if you are trying a new skill like rendering or laying blocks.

  • YouTube and Bunnings D.I.Y. videos are your friends.

  • Get a tradie to do the jobs you think would be worth having done right the first time, e.g. laying the foundation slab with vertical reinforcing bars, etc.
