An old orange-coloured Pine entertainment unit was transformed in a dramatic upcycling project as part of a feature wall with television.

The project

Large 80's orange Pine wall unit, upcycled into contemporary cabinet, framing large screen TV and feature wall.

Centre of lower cabinet squared off, bench top profile reshaped. Upper glass doors removed (removed prior to photograph) and resized, and glass replaced with left over 4mm Ply sheets. Base moulding patched with trim removed from top of unit. Left upper cabinet removed, and timber sanded and recycled into natural timber return.

Body of unit painted with cabinet paint. New Pine mouldings white washed and added to back wall, as timber feature.

Step 2

Left upper cabinet removed from base with hammer and chisels. Base of top sanded flat and centre front edge of base reshaped with sander to match sides. Unit painted with stain blocking undercoat and graphite coloured cabinet paint. Top section now a base with right upper cabinet repositoned on base, when paint dry. Glass removed from doors, and door frames cut with jigsaw - resized to fit lower cabinet. Left over 4mm Ply substituted for glass. Original hinges from doors fitted to lower cabinets.

Step 3

Timber removed from left upper cabinet, sanded and cut on mitre saw to make top and two sides of return. Timber sanded and paint washed with paint diluted one-in-four with water. Timber pieces joined at 90 degree angles with Liquid Nails and timber screws. Tasmanian Oak cover strip glued and nailed to timber edges. Timber sealed with Cabots water-based Carbothane clear in satin finish. Timber return screwed from inside left lower cupboard, through bench top, and into return with 40mm wood screws.

Nail holes filled with Timbermate Pine wood filler and Pine quad applied to neaten top edge of mouldings - fixed with Liquid Nails. Doors fitted to bottom cabinets.
