Getting Established

Kaboodle cabinets were at the heart of a heritage laundry transformation, which also included dog hutches, Tasmanian Oak benchtops and pressed copper splashback.

The project

We needed to access the laundry from inside the house and wanted it to double as a rear entry to our 1885 Victorian arts and crafts home. The previous renovation was poorly designed and purely utilitarian, but after two weeks of leave, and several week nights, my wife and I transformed the ugly duckling into a swan, complementing the heritage feel and features of the rest of the house.

Steps

Step 1

Strip out old cabinets, repurposing some of the old Kaboodle carcasses. Remove old Lino flooring.

Step 2

Install tile underlay and paint with sealant. Install new carcasses, using battens to support overhead cabinets. Move plumbing and electrical outlet points.

Step 3

Attach doors but leave protected with film until everything else is done, to prevent scratching. Custom build framing for dog hutches.

Step 4

Custom order or make Tasmanian Oak bench tops. Join using clamps and route facing edge using a clamped guide. Sand, stain, seal and install benchtop. Then install basin and tap.

Step 5

Paint ceiling and other areas that can be painted. Tile floor (after painting to avoid paint splashes). Install pre-painted skirting boards and crown moulding, then seal gaps.

Step 6

Touch up paint work as needed, then put up wallpaper - an art in itself. Install pre-cut and folded pressed copper splash back, finish installation of electrical outlets, light fitting and switches. Line cupboards with linoleum, attach door hardware and finally, remove protective film from cabinetry.
