How to build framing and bracing for a shed?

Hi all,

I’m building a shed and am planning the frame. The shed will be 3.2m by 2.4m. Height is 2.2m with peaked roof at 2.6m (high point).

do i need to add bracing to prevent my frame from moving side to side? If so how do i install and what product is best?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about building a shed.

Is this your first attempt at building a shed? I propose visiting your local council first and familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations regarding shed size and height. Some states are very strict when it comes to shed height so it's important that your design complies with the local rules.

Building and planning a timber shed is an exciting and highly involved project. You'll need to be familiar with building a wall frame and roof construction. You'll need tools such as a circular saw, cordless drill and a tape measure.

To make your project a lot easier, I propose having a look at STILLA 2.53 x 2.45 x 2.55m Glendale Cedar Shed. This is a timber shed kit that has everything cut and ready to assemble.

I also suggest having a look at this discussion - How to build a wooden shed? by @mikebarker. You'll be able to get an idea of how involved it is to construct a timber shed.

Hi @thebakery I can't really add any more than what @EricL has suggested. His point to first check with local council is your first stop to see if any building permit is required. The other related point is the position of the shed for any easement restriction.

You won't need any bracing for a timber shed of those dimensions. I would checkout those links @EricL provided to kit version options and if your still keen to build your own (the real fun way) Then @mikebarker shed project post looks like it would will be a great source of inspiration and design tips.

I like the idea of bracing, even if its just for piece of mind. For a small shed like yours I would probarly use a metal strap diagonally across the walls as being the easiest.

@EricL and @Nailbag information pretty much nails it. 🙂 If you havnt done a shed before a prebuilt one may be an idea to step you into the space.

Is there a reason your ceiling is 2200mm height? Also something to consider is the base the shed wioll sit on, where water will flow from the walls down. This is something that always pops up in questions, considering it beforehand may make it easier to handle.
