How to install 9mm cement sheet on outside of garage timber stud wall?

I intend using James Hardie 2700x1200x9mm 3.24sqm Villaboard Lining to the outside of my carport stud wall (transforming into garage). I am using this to meet BAL-FZ requirements, following the guidelines of the Hardies 'Boundary Wall System' for a fire rating of 60/60/60 minutes. It will be laid over the top of BAL-FZ rated sarking. The cement sheeting will be rendered in future.

What is the quickest method for fixing this to the timber stud wall?

Clouts are probably the ideal fixing, but they have to be manually hammered in

Is there a cordless nailing/screwing tool available for this application?

Re: Quickest method to install 9mm cement sheet to outside of garage timber stud wall

Hi @Victory,

It's great to hear that you sorted out the permit situation!

All approved fixing methods are in the Villaboard lining installation guide. Please note that Villaboard is an internal lining sheet, not designed as an exterior board. However, to answer your question, 30mm x 2.8mm Galvanised FC Nails are the only fixing method for a timber frame. Screwing the sheets is only an appropriate method for steel frames, as there are specialised screws available from James Hardie for that purpose. They do not produce a specialised screw for timber frames.

Typically, you would use a "blue board" to clad the exterior of a wall, but they are generally only up to 7.5mm thick. I understand this thickness might not adhere to your BAL rating specifications.

BGC Durascape is an external cladding system that's also 9mm thick, so you might like to look at that instead. A textured paint can be used over it to provide a render-like finish.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks Mitchell - you have been very helpful.

Thanks for pointing out Villaboard is for internal - I rushed reading over that.

I have double checked & 6mm cement sheet is the minimum BAL-FZ requirement for external cladding - so I will go with your 7.5mm suggestion (HardieTex 7.5mm cladding). I was just intending to 'over engineer' with 9mm.

I note that James Hardie recommend the Paslode Nailer for their cement sheeting - I will investigate to see if there are others:

Once again thanks for your input.
