How to insulate brick garage walls?

Hello, looking to convert my cold brick garage to a playroom. Looking for cost effective and easy recommendations for insulating the walls? Could I work with the shape of the wall and just place foam boards inbetween the raised bricks? Do i need a gap? Do i need battons etc? Any help appreciated

Hello @lisamariedack

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about converting your brick garage into a playroom.

I propose having a quick look at this featured project - Garage converted into home library by @Dave-1. It has heaps of great ideas, and its conversion was very well thought out. As for your brick wall, I propose building a timber batten frame and anchoring it to your brick wall. The timber batten can then hold the insulation in place, and you can line the timber frame with your preferred cover.

Here is a great example of the walls getting framed up - Garage lining for stud walls stage 1 by @Dave-1. Here is part two - Garage lining for stud walls stage 2 (Cornice and skirting boards). This would be the most effective long-term way to insulate the room.

If you have any other questiosn we can help with, please let us know.

Re: How to insulate brick garage walls?

Afternoon @lisamariedack

Thats a nice space to work with, I was goingto post the links to my garage retrofit but then read @EricL's words lol

Definently you could have the false stud walls with insulation and then plaster straight over the lot and straight past your brick supports. (Note that garage floors tend to have a slope to them so it wont be square.

For the other wall I was thinking of Prempanel 2700 x 600 x 21mm Oak Timber Acoustic Panel and probarly install four thin horizontal slats along that wall to connect the panels to. brick walls I have found might look straight but arnt always and the slats will help give a uniform surface. I wouldnt have the panels resting on the ground for the same reaon i wouldnt have the plaster on the ground, maybe 20mm off just so moisture cant travel upwrads as easily.

Would be a nice project to do

Re: How to insulate brick garage walls?

Thanks to you both so much for thos useful info. How would you suggest i insulate the floor? On a budget but efficient enough. The floor is concrete and very cold

Re: How to insulate brick garage walls?

Hi @lisamariedack,

The best thing you can do to insulate your floor is to add thick floor coverings.

Thick, plush carpets or shag rugs will both soften the floor and create a buffer between the cold concrete and your feet.

Alternatively, foam mats could be a good option. You could use them to cover the entire floor and then add some rugs on top for some extra cushion and warmth.

Let me know what you think.
