How to insulate shed roller door?

I've got two large shed roller doors that face north. I've just priced up getting foilboard for the roof, but the dark, north-facing roller doors will also be a source of heat.

How can I go about insulating these? They are opened relatively rarely (maybe once a month or less). I was thinking about foilboard attached with magnets but happy to hear other ideas.

Re: Insulating shed roller door?

Hi @bazz235,

Thank you for your question about insulating your shed's roller doors.

Roller doors are tricky if you are looking for a permanent solution because they are carefully calibrated to roll in a specific way. This means any addition, however thin, can throw out the balance of the roller door, which is not advisable.

I'm assuming there is side access to your shed, so you could enter the shed to remove the insulation before rolling it up. Is that correct?

If so, then your plan of attaching foilboard in an easily removable way sounds like a good option. The magnet idea sounds like it could work well. Another thought I had was to use velcro on the foilboard and roller door. There wouldn't be enough on the roller door to affect it like a liner would, so you could leave the strips attached to the roller door, making it easy to lift the foilboard back into place.

Let me know what you think.

Hello @bazz235,

Two shade mesh screens on the outside secured with Magnets or Velcro.

Cheers

Re: Insulating shed roller door?

Hi @bazz235

I also would not recommending any form of modification to the roller door system as per @JacobZ comments.

Would you consider a shallow almost replicant opening in front of the garage with a manual or electric blockout blinds in a track system? It would still allow full functionality of the roller doors and you could colour match everything to be an almost seamless facade.

The air gap between garage doors and blinds will add another layer of natural insulation.
