How to paint a garage?

Hello, I've a garage with a partially rusted sewage pipe. a few questions about cleaning and painting it (walls, floor, ceiling):

1. what is the best type of paint for this purpose. how much of it to get and what tool to paint with.

2. does the pipe require a clean before that.

3. possibly also high pressure clean of garage surfaces inside?

4. could a bunnings tradie do this all and how much would it cost?

5. how long would this take to dry before the garage is ready to use.

6. is it better to submerge the pipe into a layer of cement or something other as an extra to ensure minimal damage in case of leak

For a heavily rusted cast-iron sewage pipe, proper preparation is key. Start by sanding the rust back to clean metal, then apply a rust converter to stabilise any remaining corrosion. Once treated, prime the pipe with White Knight Rust Guard Metal Primer in Medium Grey, followed once dry by a topcoat of White Knight Rust Guard Epoxy Enamel in your chosen colour. A small brush or mini roller works best for painting pipes, and it’s worth avoiding white if you’re concerned about rust stains showing through later.

Before painting, clean the pipe thoroughly to remove any dirt or grease, as this will help the products adhere properly. High-pressure cleaning of the garage itself is optional, but can be beneficial if the surfaces are particularly dirty.

With epoxy paints, the pipe should be touch-dry within a few hours and fully cured in a few days, especially if the area is well-ventilated, so the garage can still be used during that time.

It’s not recommended to encase the pipe in cement or similar material—if the pipe leaks in the future, covering it will make locating and fixing the problem far more difficult.

Thanks. What about painting walls and floor and ceiling of the garage itself?

So sorry, I missed those questions. You could certainly use a pressure washer to remove dirt and grime @st22. Depending on how soiled the walls and ceiling are, you can then scrub them down with Sugar Soap. You'd then paint with something similar to Dulux Wash and Wear and Dulux ceiling paint.

For the floor, the preparation technique would be specific to the product you choose to use. For example, if you were to use an epoxy product, preparation is included in this How to apply an epoxy to a garage floor guide. It typically involves an acid etch to key the surface ready to accept paint.

Thank you for your advice, it was helpful for making requests.

Bunnings Marketplace took a week and provided a reply which did not include a quote. A local trade replied within 2 hours and did a beautiful paint job with a primer and two coats.
