How to replace garage window?

Hi gang,

I’m looking to modernise my garage (epoxied the floor and sprayed it already). I’m pretty handy but I’ve not replaced a window before (my next job).

My google searches are not fruitful when it comes to a 1995 built house with an alloy framed window held in via mortar (seems pretty how you going as it’s coming off)

The window is ~1510x600x(standard brick depth)- though the opening looks to be 605mm and they have laid some mortar down to not have a 5mm gap at the bottom (see picture)

It looks like it will come out fairly easily.. a few good tonks and away we go. What I am not sure on is how to replace it. Can I get something made up that screws into the brick (pref not Ramset). Is it worth putting timber framing in then screwing the window to that?

Thanks for any guidance or help. It’s got me a bit stumped!

To start, can I just ask why you’re looking to replace the window? The design itself is still relatively modern — the only thing that really dates it for me is the cream paint. It would honestly take about 45 minutes to prep the frame and another 30 minutes to spray it. If you changed the colour to white or black, you could modernise the look without the huge amount of work and cost involved in a full replacement.

If you’re set on replacing it, though, you could definitely have a custom-sized window made to suit the opening. Just keep in mind that custom sizes usually come with a pretty hefty price tag. It might end up being more cost-effective to adjust the opening slightly to fit a standard-size window instead.

As for fixing the new window in, if you’re trying to avoid using Dynabolts, you could use something like Tapcon screws straight into the mortar lines. Even if you were to put some framing timber in, you’d still need to fix that timber to the brick or mortar anyway, so it doesn’t really get you around needing to drill into the masonry.

Just me being pedantic! I can spray it no issue. There are a couple of issues I would want to address if I keep it. 1) I don’t have the key to open it but I suspect I can drill the lock out? 2) gaps around the window, but I assume I can add some caulking?

For the lock @tommymac, I'd remove the whole assembly and install a new window lock. You might need to take the window out and slide the existing lock off its edge. Obviously, if it's locked currently, you'll need to drill it out. Remember that glass can shatter easily, so when working around it, ensure you're wearing PPE including safety glasses and gloves, a long-sleeved shirt, trousers and enclosed footwear.

The gaps around the window would be a quick fix with some gap filler.
