I am planning to get a cordless Ryobi lawn mower: https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-lithium-36v-5-0ah-18-brushless-lawn-mower-kit_p0088131
And I also need a drill and looking at this one: https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-18v-one-drill-driver-skin-only_p0096074 which is a skin only. How do I know if I can use the mower's battery for this drill? And in general how do I tell which Ryobi products will share batteries? Thanks.
Hi @leross13
Totally agree with your comments, I have only used my chainsaw 4 times, at the very least Bunnings and Ryobi should be able to exchange our saws for one that fits the current battery range. Still taking to Bunnings at the moment
Hi @MitchellMc
Your Private Message did not open, it just disappeared. I have responded to your generic email.
Thanks.
As someone who has first hand knowledge within the powertool industry, one thing I can assure you with high-confidence, is that Ryobi would never Quote "intentionally modify its range of tools to make them incompatible with future power sources & thus creating a whole new market for their range." In fact the opposite is true. Their 18V ONE+ range is based on a the same battery fitment for over 22yrs. This is despite the fact that the push in style fitment can't be changed to the more compact and ergonomic slide in without impacting millions of customers globally.
Though you're 100% correct in the incorrect labelling of that battery pack, it does only affect that particular early model 36V chainsaw. To ensure existing and future 36V customers tools are compatible, they switched to open slide in battery fitments from the slot in. As with the 18V system, the 36V has been around for about 12yrs and the last thing Ryobi would want to do is jeopardise the existing global customer base with a new battery fitment system. These comments don't charge this particular situation, but hope it provides some confidence to yourself and others reading this moving forward.
But again to your point, the battery packaging needs to be correctly relabelled. And as @MitchellMc has pointed out on a few occasions, the Bunnings team will offer genuine support and solutions to their customers if given the opportunity. And I am confident the feedback on the packaging errors has been reported back to Ryobi for follow-up.

Hi @Nailbag @leross13 @MitchellMc
I only used my used my chainsaw 4 times with a manufacturing date 2017, I think the only satisfactory outcome for this manufacturing oversight would be to take these chainsaws out of service via a recall or tool exchange, this would then solve any repackaging for the batteries and also avoid any intervention by the ACCC solving everyone's problems
Hi @Paulmooly,
I'm currently in contact with your store of purchase and have tried reaching out to you a few times now via phone. I'll update you as soon as I hear back from the store management team.
Mitchell
Hi @Paulmooly and @leross13,
I've spoken to Josh, one of the managers at Bunnings Kingsmeadow, who is eager to help resolve this issue for you. He's asked if you can please bring the machines in with your proof of purchase so he can assist. If you don't have your receipt, our team in-store can assist in locating it.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Firstly, thanks for the phone conversation we had yesterday & your prompt response today.
I think I can locate my purchase receipt, but will talk to Josh if I have issues.
Regards,
Ian
Thanks @MitchellMc
I am currently out of Tassie at the moment, probably why I have been hard to get hold of, thanks for all your prompt responses, I will be back next week and get in touch with Josh at Kings Meadows and see how we go,
Many thanks Paul
Hi @MitchellMc,
Hi Mitchell,
Thank you for your understanding and assistance with my recent chainsaw / battery issue.
I called in to see Josh today & he sorted me with a new model saw.
Very pleased with the outcome.
Once again, thanks for your help.
@Paulmooly there are 3 people called Josh in the store. You will need to ask for "Josh, who is one of the Managers" so that whoever you ask at the front counter will be able to identify who you are after. I wasted about 1/2 an hour waiting for the wrong Josh...lol
@leross13
Thanks for the heads up, got a call from one of the Vic stores today, they should be in touch with your soon. Good to see Bunnings are committed to their customers 👍
@Paulmooly
Yes, quite impressed with the level of service & how quickly everything was resolved.
I got a call from Rob in Victoria as well, about 30 seconds after I left the Bunnings car park today, but my issue was all resolved by then.
I'm pleased to hear we've been able to assist @leross13 and @Paulmooly.I'm so sorry for the inconvenience, and glad that it's getting sorted.
Thanks @MitchellMc and Josh at Bunnings Kings Meadows, I am impressed with the level of service I have received by you guys with this problem and I am glad to report that it has now been solved. I have built most of my home from this store and will certainly use Bunnings at every opportunity. Keep up the good work guys.
Thanks again Paul
I have an older chainsaw RCS36B35 and after the original 36v battery karked it I naturally went to bunnings to buy another only to find that 36v battery is obsolete. My chainsaw is in good condition and I'm not very happy that I might have to buy a new one. What can bunnings do about this.
Hi @punsuz,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
Unfortunately, due to the age of this particular chainsaw and alterations to the design of the battery in that time, there are no longer suitable batteries for this chainsaw being produced.
I will reach out to you for some further details so we can try to find a solution for you.

I have a Ryobi RCS36B35 Chainsaw which is in great condition - had very little use. The battery has failed and I cannot buy a replacement that will fit.
I have rung Ryobi about this and they have been very unhelpful so far.
Last week they told me my problem was being referred to their technical department and they would get back to me next day. They have also told me this by email and again this week. It is beginning to look like they are hoping I will give up & go away!
I have noticed that the new 36v battery claims full backwards compatibility. I am wondering if I will need to go to the Department of Fair Trading about this. I have spent a lot of money on both 36v & 18v Ryobi tools!
Hi @noelferg,
I'm so sorry you've had this issue.
Unfortunately, due to design constraints, there is an incompatibility issue with the new batteries and the Ryobi RCS36B35 Chainsaw. I would suggest speaking with the manager at your store of purchase to see if there is anything they can do to resolve the issue. I'll reach out via private message to gather some details and assist with the process.
I am in need of a new battery for my Ryobi 36v Chainsaw that drops in & can't find one the saw was purchased from Bunnings & now after going back there they don't have a battery & my local store had no interest in helping, I have invested thousands of dollars on Ryobi products thru Bunnings, very dissapointing
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @003chris.
I'll reach out via private message for some additional details and see if I can assist in any way.Mitchell
is the OLP18 bypass lopping attachment compatible with the R18PHT130 pole hedge cutter
Hello @Derek5
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. it's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about Ryobi compatibility.
The18V ONE+ 32mm Telescopic Pole Lopper Attachment is part of the EZ Reach range and will work with the Ryobi 18V ONE+ 40cm EZ REACH Pole Hedge Trimmer R18PHT130.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

My Ryobi lawnmower RLM36BL purchased in 2023 stopped today soon after I started mowing, despite starting with a fully charged battery (4ah36V Lithium). When I removed the battery and checked the charge indicator it showed only one light, but when I put it back into the charger and switched it on, the charge indicator showed all four green lights. I took it off the charger and again it showed only one flashing green light, and would not start the mower.
Is the battery stuffed?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @BillT. It's fantastic to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about Ryobi batteries. It definitely sounds like there’s an issue, though it’s hard to tell from your description whether it’s the battery or the charger causing it. If you have another Ryobi tool that uses the same battery, or another battery for the mower, you could try swapping them to see whether the problem is with the battery or the charger.
From what you’ve described, it’s more likely that the battery itself is at fault. Ryobi 36V batteries usually come with a three-year warranty, so since yours was purchased in 2023, it should still be covered. I’d recommend taking the battery, the charger, the mower (if purchased as a bundle), and your proof of purchase to your local Bunnings store and having them assess it under warranty. They should be able to swap the battery out if it’s faulty. Please let me know if you have any questions.Mitchell
I bought replacement 8ah HP ryobi 18v batteries for my ryobi lawn mower only to find they dont fit the law mower. the mower is only 2 years old. Are there now more than one, one+ ie actually two+? Why are they still be advertised as universal? Can I get a new mower as I have been sold a bit of a fib? I have found that in store nobody really knows.
Regards
Bill
Hi Mitchel, this is not correct is it. There are three! 18V one+ , 18Vone+ HP and 36V. Many devices, over 25 of them, cant use the 18V HP, which is what all the 6ah and higher batteries all are now. So if you have a high demand 18v one+ device you are stuck with 5ah which doesnt last long on the lawn movers like my ryobi one that is only two year old and now redundant. So really its not one+ it is two+. And nowhere can I find the ryobi or bunnings are admitting to this.
Hi @Medsy,
As far as I am aware, that mower will still accept the current range of batteries in the same amp-hour range that it was initially bought out with, which was likely 5Ah. The 8Ah battery is physically larger in size and suits the vast majority of Ryobi one + tools. In some situations, it might not fit in a machine where the body encroaches too closely on the battery. They've been bought out to offer extended run-time in tools that accept that size of battery. Your machine was likely produced on the cusp of the new, larger-capacity batteries being developed and can't be retrofitted with them.
I apologise that the batteries you've purchased do not fit your machine, and I trust our in-store team would be more than happy to accept them for a return due to the mix-up.
Hi again @Medsy,
Nothing has changed with the One+ system regarding the offering, apart from it being extended to now include higher-capacity batteries. All tools that have been produced in the past still have the very same batteries available for them today. Your Ryobi mower was designed and sold with 5Ah batteries. For an extended runtime, additional 5Ah batteries can be purchased. Though I understand a single higher-capacity battery would be preferable.
I'm not aware of over 25 devices not accepting the new, larger capacity and sized batteries. But, this is definitely something I will look into, as if it is the case, it certainly affects being able to say that the batteries suit all products, and we need to specify that the high-capacity batteries might not suit all tools. Annecdotally, I have the 8Ah battery, and it suits all my tools, including the circular saw, detail sander, random orbital sander, edge trimmer, blower, reciprocating saw, brad nailer, drill driver, hammer drill, and impact driver.
As mentioned, thanks for bringing this to our attention.
Hi @MitchellMc - how's it going ? Sorry to join the discussion with a whinge, but I need some help and based on the discussions here, you seem to be the man !!!
I'm another owner of a Ryobi 14" 36V chainsaw model RCS36B35 with the battery compartment that doesn't accept the new 36V 4Ah battery (model R36BTY4) that I use in my mower & blower. I have been back to Bunnings and asked about it so they opened a fault with the Bunnings Help Desk for me. The Help Desk contacted me, confirmed the tool should take "up to the 5Ah battery" and then gave me the number for the Ryobi Help Desk so I could make further enquiries. The Ryobi Help Desk suggested I take the tool to Bunnings and see if they have a suitable battery. Unfortunately neither Help Desk could tell me what battery will fit, if any. I seem to be doing all the work here so far !
As others have said - the batteries are marketed as being backward compatible and I realise this is mostly true but in the case of this particular model chainsaw it's not. I'm hoping that since you've dealt with a few of these problems previously that you may be able to offer me a better solution than running around looking for batteries that may or may not fix my problem.
TIA
Tony
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @shnoof. It's wonderful to have you join us.
No need to apologise, I'm sure it's a frustrating situation.
You might have read some of my previous posts regarding this saw. Essentially, the current range of 5ah batteries do not suit the saw as their new larger chassis does not slot in. A potential workaround would be to use two 2.5ah batteries, which I believe (though I haven't personally tried to slot them in) should fit. As with any product, if you feel that you haven't got a fair use out of it and the change of battery style means you can not use it, I would recommend you speak with a manager at the store of purchase and request that the item be returned. I do apologise for this inconvenience. Mitchell
