What is a good clear coat to use over Pine panel?

I have just purchased the Specrite timber multi use pine panel and I want to put a clear coat over it. I want something that'll prevent food and drink from staining it if it gets spilt. Please let me know if there is anything you recommend.

For your Specrite Pine panel, I recommend using the water-based version of Cabot's Cabothane Clear. This water-based polyurethane offers the same durable protection as the oil-based alternative but comes with several added benefits.

Water-based Cabothane has very low odour, making it much more pleasant to work with indoors. It also has easier cleanup — just use water rather than solvents, which is both convenient and environmentally friendly. Additionally, water-based finishes tend to dry faster, so you can apply multiple coats in less time and get a smooth, protective finish that resists spills and stains.

This finish is ideal for surfaces like kitchen benchtops or tables where you want a clear, natural look while ensuring easy maintenance.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

Either option will work, but with flat, wide panels, a roller is the better option simply because it will speed things up.

I'd suggest using a short nap roller, such as the UNi-PRO 100mm 4mm Nap Little Ripper Microfibre Mini Roller, as the short nap will ensure the varnish doesn't build up, resulting in a smooth finish.

It is a table top I am clear coating. How many coats would you usually recommend? 😊🙏

Hi @JayBee1,

It's best to follow the instructions on the packaging of the specific product you use, as they can differ, but they usually recommend 2-3 coats.

Generally speaking, two coats should do the trick for a tabletop, but if you were installing it near a tap or it is likely to have a lot of liquid on it, then I'd always go with three coats.

Remember that you can always add another coat if you feel it needs it.
