What rust converter for Swarf on Colorbond?

Can someone please recommend a colorbond safe rust converter? There is some swarf in an area I can't get to so want to spray some rust converter there as not much else I can do

Re: Swarf on colorbond - safe rust converter

Hi @Taco,

Do you have a photo of the area you are looking to rust treat? How unreachable are we talking?

Before applying a rust converter to your Colorbond steel, it’s important to understand that rust converters react chemically with iron oxide to leave behind a hard, black, inert primer layer.

If you spray this converter beyond the bare rust spots onto the adjacent Colorbond paint, you will deposit that same dark coating on the painted surface, resulting in noticeable black staining.

This is fine, but there will be a noticeable black patch that should be overcoated with something like this Dulux Metalshield Rust Defence tinted to the same colour as your Colorbond.

If you are happy to proceed, then you can use White Knight Rust Guard Rust Converter, followed by White Knight Rust Guard Metal Primer Paint before topcoating.

Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Hi Jacob,

Thanks for your reply .

Its behind the shed wall and insulation so I can't get to it internally or externally

Re: Swarf on colorbond - safe rust converter

Hi @Taco,

If you were to simply spray the outside of the panel, then it wouldn't really deal with the rust that is behind it.

Can you unscrew the panel, then lift it so you can treat the rust, then screw it back in place?

This would give you a better fix for the issue, as more of the rust would be treated.

Let me know what you think.

Re: Swarf on colorbond - safe rust converter

Hi Jacob, Thanks for your reply

Cant get the panel off really , it's like this around most of the shed , and they are full colorbond panels and edging,  strapping etc. Shed would be over 4m high at peak,  so can't even get that high to get edging off

Any chance of a photo @Taco? Even if it's just of the area you need to access to coat the rust. That might assist our members in offering solutions.

Re: Swarf on colorbond - safe rust converter

Hi @Taco,

I apologise as I didn't see your image. The rust would likely be isolated to the cut edge. I'd advise painting the rust converter onto the bottom edge with a fine paintbrush. I would use masking tape to cover the painted surface directly next to it to avoid it getting on there. Any that does come in contact with the paint can be immediately wiped off with a wet cloth. Once you've finished, you can seal the edge by painting on a colour-matched paint.
