Can steel stakes be used in a raised garden bed?

Hi team, I’m building a raised garden bed to plant some edibles, and was wondering if it is ok to utilise steel sticks inside in the corners to keep it all together?

I saw Bunnings sell some of them, however looking in their website as well as the manufacturer’s website it doesn’t clearly state that it can be used inside a garden bed aimed at growing edibles, main concern is avoiding contamination of the food we are about to consume.

Any advice is much appreciated! Thanks!

Thank you for your question.

There's no reason you can't use the ultrapost range around edible plants; however, they are not the best option for holding your sleeper garden bed together as they are not a perfect 90° corner.

These Jack 450mm Heavy Duty Steel Corner Stake Sleeper Pegs are designed for this specific purpose and are perfectly fine to use around edible plants.

You could also use these Dunnings 60 x 60 x 140mm M10 Galvanised Angle Brackets to screw your sleepers together and then use the ultraposts or corner stakes to anchor the sleepers to the earth.

Alternatively, these retain it sleeper posts are great for creating sleeper garden beds.

The method used in How To Build a Raised Garden Bed With Sleepers, where sections of sleeper are used as vertical corner posts, is also a great option that will reduce the amount of metal hardware used in your sleeper garden beds.
