Can you Weed n Feed a new lawn?

Hi i have laid new Polmetto turf 6 weeks ago in Brisbane and I have a lot of broad leaf weeds coming through. Can I use a weedkiller on the lawn yet? And what fertiliser would you recomend

Re: Weed n Feed for new Buffa

Hello @PadraigK

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your lawn.

Your caution is spot on, at six weeks old your Palmetto turf's roots are still establishing, so applying a full coverage weed’n’feed treatment now could stress the lawn. Instead, for now focus on manual removal and letting the grass grow stronger before treating the whole area. Once your lawn has been down at least 10–12 weeks, it should be robust enough for targeted herbicide use.

For fertilising right now, choose a nutrient boost safe for young buffalo turf. A great option is Lawn Builder 1 L Scotts Buffalo Slow-Release Liquid Lawn Fertiliser, which is gentle enough for a young lawn. It applies via hose-on sprayer, thickens the turf to crowd out weeds, and covers up to 150 m² without burning the grass.

In a few weeks, when your lawn is more established, switch to a granular slow-release fertiliser for sustained feeding. Options available at Bunnings include Scotts Lawn Builder 4 kg Buffalo Lawn Food or 8 kg Buffalo Slow Release Lawn Fertiliser, both safe for Palmetto turf and feeding for up to three months. These granules don’t require watering in and support strong root development when applied from spring through early autumn.

Because your Palmetto turf is only six weeks old, it’s still too early to apply a full-coverage weed treatment across the entire lawn. However, for now you can safely spot-treat individual broadleaf weeds using a hand-held applicator or brush. The Yates 250 mL BuffaloPro Selective Bindii and Broadleaf Weed Killer Concentrate is suitable for this purpose. You can mix a small amount in a sprayer or dab it carefully onto the leaves of visible weeds with a wand or applicator, taking care to avoid spraying the surrounding young grass. This approach allows you to control the worst weeds without risking harm to the developing turf. Once your lawn reaches the 12-week mark, you can then use the hose-on version for broader control if needed.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
