DIY garden with turf and steeping stones

When I lived in a small apartment in Brunswick before I bought my own home, I was always uploading pics of public garden and flowering blooms on my walks around the neighborhood to social media. I made a promise to myself that I would use the inspiration to create a beautiful garden for myself. It was a lot of hard work which included manually sifting and re-laying one ton of sand and dragging the equivalent in gravel through the house to the garage to donate to a local quarry. Not to mention digging out the garden beds and learning what plants thrived best in different parts of the garden, but looking at it today I think to myself, it was so worth it!

Materials

Tuff Turf 1m x 4m 25mm Pile K9 Synthetic Turf - Pre-packed Roll -
Tuscan Path 400-600mm Granite Stepping Stone
Tuscan Path 10 - 15mm 1.5kg White Decorative Pebble
99% of plants in garden from Bunnings Nursery

Tools

Icon Plastics 395mm Garden Sieve With Hand Grips -
Cyclone Rake/Hoe Cultivator Long Timber Handle
Saxon 150L Garden Bag - 3 Pack

Steps

Step 1

Reinforce the bottom of the fence with wire mesh and builders damp course to protect plinth from rotting and prevent any animals from digger under the fence.

Step 2

Digging out the garden beds was a huge job. Not only did I need to dig through a good 5-10 cm of combined gravel and sand I then had to dig deep enough to create garden beds to sustain future plants.

Step 3

Manually sifting and separating 1 ton of sand and storing it in garden bags and donating the equivalent in gravel to the local quarry. I am pretty sure my neighbors got sick of listen to my Spotify play list pretty quickly! The first garden seive didn't last under pressure and I had to buy a new one pretty quickly.

Step 4

It was finally time to relay and level 1 ton of sand. I thought I could just use a garden rake but ended up having to hire a water barrel roller from Bunnings to make sure the ground was flat.

Step 5

Fixing the bowing plinth thanks to my neighbor's large tree.

Step 6

Reinforce fence around garden and paint white. The idea came to me when I was looking for a solution to reinforce the fence of my custom built cat enclosure. I decided to reinforce the fence and plinth for the whole garden. I was on first name basis with the guys in the timber section for a while there, hahaha.

Step 7

Lay k9 Tuft and string fairy lights across the garden! A photo prior to buying a hammer drill and putting them up properly.

Step 8

The garden has undergone some revisions in terms of plants. I have tried to create an evergreen garden which can be enjoyed year round. A finishing touch was the addition of the decorative panels to the plain brick wall.

Step 9

When I look at the garden when I wake up to every morning I think it was so worth the effort!
