How to build a pergola with roof and climbing plants?

Hi, I want to build a pergola that will be attached to the house at one side and extend out about 2.5m. I want to grow climbing roses over it like the pic but I also want it to have a roof - probably polycarb. Is it possible to have both? I don't mind if the roof is just in a section of it - just would like to have some part of it a bit rain proof.

It's possible to build a pergola with both a roof and climbing plants like roses. However, there are a few key considerations when using polycarbonate for the roof with plants grown nearby. Polycarbonate sheeting is great for protecting from rain and providing some shade, but it can also trap heat, which may not be ideal for your roses. While roses thrive in sunlight, they can struggle with excessive heat, particularly if the polycarbonate roof is placed too close to them. To avoid this, it would be best to have the roses grow over the section of the pergola without the polycarbonate. This way, the roses can benefit from natural sunlight and airflow, while the polycarbonate roof can cover areas where you want protection from the rain, such as over a seating space.

If you prefer to use polycarbonate for the entire roof, consider leaving some sections open or ensuring good ventilation to prevent the roses from overheating. Additionally, make sure the pergola's structure can support the climbing roses, and consider using trellises or strong beams for the plants to climb. By balancing the amount of shade and sunlight and using the polycarbonate roof strategically, you can create a beautiful, functional space that protects both you and your climbing roses.
