How to change duration of watering on Gardena Multicontrol Duo?

I purchased a Gardena Multicontrol Duo which is straightforward to set up with one exception. The manual indicates that you can change the duration of Manual Watering. The manual says:

[ Fig. P16 ]: Press Man.-key to open the valve manually (or to close an open valve). Run Time and the watering time in minutes (set to 30 minutes in the works) flash for 10 seconds on the display.
[ Fig. P17 ]: Whilst the watering time in minutes is flashing, the watering duration can be modified with the ▼-▲ button (between 0:00 and 0:59) (example: 10 minutes) and confirm with the OK-key

Problem is the minutes do not flash and no combination of keys I have pressed will make them flash. So I can't change the duration of the manual watering time. I thought this was possibly a faulty timer and returned the original, got a new one but it has the same behaviour

I just installed the Gardena Multicontrol Duo, switched the water on and thought I'd see what happens with Manual. When installed, i.e. has water pressure in the unit, the minutes do flash and can be changed. Pity this isn't mentioned in the manual. Only very minor gripe is the Manual time returns to 30 minutes and can't be set to a default Manual watering period.

Thank you for your patience. Gardena has asked to make sure that the face of the unit is fixed securely to the body of the water computer. Manual watering will not work if the face is not on the unit. They also suggest making sure that you are not trying to manual water at the same time an automatic program is set to operate.
