I would like some help designing and choosing plants for a Japanese theme Balcony please.
Thank you.
Hi @Joycey,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
Before designing a Japanese-inspired balcony garden, it will help to know a little more about the space, so the plants and layout suit your conditions. How large is your balcony, and is it mostly open or partly enclosed? How many hours of sun does it receive, and is the light direct, filtered, or mostly shade? Is the area exposed to strong winds or fairly sheltered?
Do you have any photos you could upload? Let me know if you need a hand with this. I am happy to help out if required.
Once you have a sense of the size and aspect, you can create a simple, calming layout with a few well-chosen elements. Natural materials like timber, stone, and gravel work well, and a single feature piece, such as a sculptural pot or a small water feature, such as this Enso Water Feature or this Bronze Lotus Water Fountain, can anchor the design.
Choose plants with elegant shapes and soft textures to create the Japanese feel. Small trees like dwarf conifers, as well as shrubs like nandina, and grasses such as mondo or liriope, all work beautifully, depending on your light levels. You might even like to try your hand at a bonsai tree if the conditions suit. You'll want to group plants in simple clusters and leave open space, so the garden feels peaceful rather than crowded.
Allow me to tag our helpful members, @Dave-1, @mich1972 and @Noelle to see if they have any ideas.

Hi @Joycey
Apart from plant choices and design ideas, as Jacob has outlined brilliantly for you, you need to be very aware of the load rating of your balcony, before you add too many potted plants and other potentially heavy features.
Plant pots, especially large ones (500mm diameter and larger), filled with potting mix and then watered regularly can have substantial weight, so you will need to be very conscious of this when planning your Japanese inspired garden.
If possible, see if you can obtain the architect's plans for your balcony to see if a load-bearing weight is specified.
Good afternoon @Joycey
Mmmmm I will wait for some photos
Its a bit hard to think of various things you could do to create an are without knowing the size ish, sunshine, concrete or timber balcony. Also if you own it or not as that will change things that can be installed.
Will wait and check back later ![]()
