How to create a new garden from scratch for new build?

Myself and my partner are about to finish our new home build. After all the excavation and building, our yard is looking like a big clay pit. It's our first home and yard to be looked after and my plan is to do it all myself as a project. Ideally, I'd like to grow grass everywhere to start with and then add garden beds and plants later. What would the best point of action be to start with? We're also trying to make this as cheap as possible, although I do assume it won't be cheap.

Congratulations on nearing the finish of your new home build! It’s great that you’re taking on the yard as a project yourself.

Given that your yard is currently a clay pit, the first thing you’ll want to focus on is addressing any slope or uneven areas. A level yard is important for drainage, as water tends to pool in low spots and run off in high spots, which can lead to erosion or unhealthy turf growth. If there’s a significant slope, you might need to install retaining walls around the perimeter or in certain areas to help level things out.

Once the yard is reasonably level, the next step would be improving the soil, especially since clay can be dense and difficult for grass to grow in. Consider adding a turf underlay or soil to help with aeration and drainage. You can also mix in organic matter like compost to improve the soil structure. This will give the grass a better chance to establish itself once you lay the turf.

When it comes to laying turf, ensure the soil is properly prepared: lightly compact it, then spread the turf underlay evenly before rolling out your grass. Watering regularly in the early stages is key to establishing healthy turf, especially in clay soils, which can dry out or get compacted easily.

In addition to levelling the yard and improving the soil, it's also a good time to consider drainage. With clay soil, water can easily pool in low spots, creating soggy areas that make it difficult for grass to grow or for future garden beds to thrive. Installing simple drainage solutions, like French drains or gravel trenches, can help direct excess water away from problem areas. If you have a slope that directs water toward the house or areas prone to pooling, addressing drainage now will prevent future flooding or erosion. Tackling this before laying turf or planting will save you time and effort later, ensuring a healthier, more stable yard in the long run.

While it may seem like a big job, starting with levelling and soil prep will set you up for success in the long run. Taking the time to do it right will save you effort and money later on when you add garden beds and plants.

While the project might seem a little overwhelming at first, creating a plan based on your long-term needs and goals and then breaking it up into small manageable tasks is going to make it so much more manageable and achievable, and help ensure you get a great result.
