How to feed cord on Ryobi 18v Line Trimmer?

Hi. A while back I bought this trimmer and it has given me more grief than help.

The cord does not feed as it should. I have tried several as well as the recommended cord that is sold for it. The cord but breaks off at the feed whole after a couple of minutes. So I take it apart and re-thread again!

I am not a newbie to whipper snippers as I owned and used a stihl brushcutter for about 30 years when on small acreage.

My question is, before I bin it, is can a different type of head on it?

Any suggestions and help would be appreciated.

Hi @wattosark,

As these are entry-level residential use whipper snippers, the options are fairly limited.

The only alternative head that I am aware of that can be used with your Ryobi 18V ONE+ 25/30cm Cordless Line is this Ryobi Flailing Blade Head, which uses small flailing blades as opposed to trimmer line.

I just had another attempt at using this trimmer.

Works fine for a couple of minutes and then the cord just snaps off. I am using the correct cord.

We bought this trimmer as well as the ryobi mower in March 2025.

Mower is good but the trimmer is not.

I will see if I can return it but we cannot find the docket.

I want a trimmer that will take a head like this

Hi @wattosark,

I have the same line trimmer. You can either feed the line out manually with the button on the side of the head every few minutes, or you need to use the auto-feed, which is triggered by tapping the throttle on and off. In practice, I just find it easier to feed the line out every couple of minutes to prevent it from being used up to the head, as then it becomes more difficult to re-feed, as the face plate needs to come off. The line shouldn't be snapping and leaving pieces around the place and the unit might be faulty. I'd recommend checking your card statement to locate the transaction, and then our in-store team can reprint your proof of purchase for you.

That type of head is designed for petrol line trimmers or electric line trimmers with traditional straight or curved shafts. You'll find those in the Ryobi 36V range.

Thanks for your reply. I do feel the trigger action used to release some line but it's not doing it now. To be honest I'm only used it on three occasions since buying it in March. I will check my bank transactions as my husband noted in his diary the day we bought this and the mower. These were wedding anniversary presents to each other. He's the mower man and I and the whipper snipperer 😆

If you have a decent amount of edging, then I'd be looking at the Ryobi 36V Brushless 33/38cm Line Trimmer 4.0Ah Kit and the Full-Bore bladed head. The trade off is it's a larger machine.
