Our front lawn has a slope, and whenever we use a reel mower, it keeps getting stuck in the uneven areas between the high and low spots. Is there a way to level the slope by top dressing in a wayto create a more even surface?
Hello @foxhound
Yes, you can level out uneven areas on a sloped front lawn using top dressing, and doing so gradually can make a big difference in how your reel mower performs. The main goal isn’t to eliminate the slope entirely, but to smooth out the dips and transitions that catch the mower and make it difficult to push.
Start by identifying the exact spots where the mower gets stuck, these are usually the low pockets or ridges that disrupt the mower’s movement. Once you’ve assessed those areas, you’ll want to prepare a suitable top-dressing mix. A common and effective blend is made from washed river sand combined with organic compost or loam, which allows for both levelling and soil improvement.
Before applying the mix, mow your lawn a little shorter than usual and remove any excess thatch so the top dressing can settle in properly. When applying, focus the mix on the low or uneven spots rather than blanketing the whole lawn unnecessarily. Spread the material evenly with a landscape rake or levelling tool, ensuring that you’re only lightly covering the grass blades and not burying them entirely. Once in place, water the area gently to help the mix settle into the soil and begin to integrate with the existing turf.
This process may need to be repeated over several weeks or months, as trying to raise deep depressions all at once can smother the grass and slow its recovery. By gradually layering top dressing and letting the grass grow through in between, you allow the surface to even out naturally without damaging the lawn’s health. With patience and repeated applications, the uneven spots will level out and the mower will be able to roll more smoothly over the area. Regular follow-up maintenance and continued observation of high-traffic areas will help maintain the improved surface over time.
