How to fix patchy lawn?

How to fix patchy lawn?

Hi I'm really new to lawn care and a bit confused with the variety of products that are available to fix patchy lawns. I mowed the grass on Sunday in the lowest setting and removed dead grass as much as I could. Now I'm left with these patchy areas that hasn't seen much growth since Sunday. I've been applying Seasol and Powerfeed. Should I do top soil or Seed & Feed? Whats the difference?

Re: How to fix patchy lawn?

Hello @hosau

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's wonderful to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about your lawn.

It appears that the soil has compacted a bit and has prevented the lawn from growing back in. I suggest aerating the entire surface and tilling the compacted area. I suggest using Saxon Lawn Aerator Sandals in combination with the Saxon Hand Cultivator with Timber Handle.

Once the area has been aerated, I recommend top dressing the area and seeding the bald spots.

Here are some handy step-by-step guides:

I also suggest having a look at this discussion - Lawn recovery with seeds by @prettyliving.

Re: How to fix patchy lawn?

Hi Eric,

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm not sure what type of grass I have so not sure which seeds I should get! I dont want to use a seed blend because I would love to have a uniform look. Can you tell from the picture what type of grass it is?

Re: How to fix patchy lawn?

Hi @hosau

It looks like Kikuyu because of it long thin leaves. But just to be safe, I suggest cutting a handful of leaves putting it in an envelope and showing it to the garden specialist at the store. They'll be able to have a good look and provide you with an accurate recommendation.

Re: How to fix patchy lawn?

Thanks Eric. One last question. I'm guessing I have to wait around 4 weeks before I can mow again? The surrounding grass will obviously grow before the seeds.

Re: How to fix patchy lawn?

Hi @hosau

I suggest setting your mower to the highest level so that the blades trim only the top layer of the tall grass. You'll want to avoid running near the young grass shoots so trim carefully. You can also use traditional garden shears to trim the lawn. It will take a bit of time, but you'll have full control of the trim.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
