How to get rid of tiny flies on indoor plants?

I’ve seen some posts around tiny fly around indoor plants I’m using an organic potting mix now I have these tiny flys. I will look at repotting them again with better potting mix suggestion on what to use and would i wash away the old soil off the plant roots before repotting? Can I put the old potting mix in the garden if out his would I get rid of it thanks

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about tiny flies in your indoor plants.

It sounds like you’ve got fungus gnats, which are common when using organic potting mixes that retain a lot of moisture. Repotting can help, but you don’t necessarily have to remove all the old soil unless the infestation is severe. If you do decide to, gently wash the roots with lukewarm water before replanting.

For a better potting mix, look for something with good drainage and aeration. Osmocote Premium Indoor Potting Mix or Brunnings Indoor Potting Mix from Bunnings are great options as they have added wetting agents and slow-release nutrients while avoiding excessive organic matter that gnats love.

You can put the old potting mix in your garden, but if it’s full of gnat larvae, it might just spread the problem. If you want to reuse it, spread it out in the sun to dry completely before using it in outdoor beds. Otherwise, seal it in a bag and dispose of it.

To prevent gnats in the future, try bottom watering (letting plants soak up water from a tray instead of watering from the top), and consider adding a layer of horticultural sand or fine gravel on top of the soil to discourage egg-laying. You can also use sticky traps near the plants to catch adults.
