How to identify grass or lawn type?

Hi guys,

Just moved into new place first time lawn owner. Have some questions:

1. Could someone help identify what type of grass I have?

2. Also in the second photo attached,  is this a weed that is growing (thr longer stems with purple tips)? This is only found in the front lawn, the neighbours front lawn seems to have these growing as well none in my backyard lawn though.

3. What's the best thing I can do to try create a "fuller" look to my lawn as some areas looking bare?

Appreciate any advice and help!

Thanks in advance!

Jimmy

Re: what type of grass?

Hello @davo2102

Thank you for sharing that photo of your lawn. In order for us to get a better idea of what kind of lawn you have, would it be possible for you to take a close-up picture of the lawns leaf? Once we see its pattern and layout, we should have a better chance of identifying the type of lawn you have.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Re: what type of grass?

Hi @davo2102,

I am fairly confident that it is couch, but it looks like there could be some kikuyu mixed in. Luckily, both of these grass types don't have any specific requirements when it comes to weed and feed.

The main grass type that requires specific products is buffalo, which I am confident your lawn isn't.

You will be fine using a standard Weed n Feed product such as this Yates Weed 'n' Feed Hose On Lawn Weed Killer.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Re: what type of grass?

When is rhe best time to weed and feed? Before or after mowing? Morning or night? And onxe applied do i just leave it or is there a process i need to follow. Once the weeds die off do i then need to pull them all out? Appreciate any help and advice so much!

Re: what type of grass?

Hi @davo2102,

It’s a good idea to mow your lawn a few days before applying weed and feed. This opens up the grass canopy and helps the product reach both the soil and the leaves of the weeds. If you mow immediately before application, the weed leaves will be too short for the herbicide to stick properly.

The best time of day to apply weed and feed is in the morning, when the air is cool and calm. Avoid applying the product in the middle of the day or when temperatures are high, as this can cause the grass to burn.

Once the weeds start to die back, usually within a week or two, you can simply leave them to decompose naturally. Most weeds will break down on their own, adding organic matter back into the soil. If any large or stubborn weeds remain, you can always pull them out by hand or rake them away to tidy the lawn. After a week or so, you can mow again, and your grass should begin to look greener, healthier, and more even.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Lawn Weed

Hi Guys,

What is the weed in the attached photo in my lawn?

Will this be eradicated with my recent weed and feed application?

Thanks,

Re: Lawn Weed

Hi @Lee777,

The weed in the attached photo appears to be chickweed. Your recent Weed-n-Feed application may control small, young plants, but older or more established patches can be persistent. For best results, you might need to do a spot treatment with a non-selective broadleaf herbicide and a weeding wand (ensure you don't contact the grass) to eradicate it fully, or if your lawn is couch, Blue couch, Fescue, Carpet, Centipede, Kentucky Blue and ryegrass you can use Amgrow 250ml Multiweed All Purpose Lawn Weeder. This product is not suitable for Buffalo.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Can someone please tell me what type of grass this is?

Wanting to get the correct herbicide for the lawns, or should I be using weed n feed?
