How to improve school garden?

Hi I need to come up with a better landscape idea than what we have at the moment. I have started pulling out the scraggy bit of grass plants and would like to know from anyone what I should leave in and replant and what to take out.

Also what other plants can I plant to compliment the plants which I can leave in.

You have a lovely foundation of native plants, and with a bit of sprucing up, this area can really stand out. For starters, I’d suggest leaving most of the native grasses in place, as they add texture and are quite resilient. Instead of pulling them out entirely, try raking through the grasses to remove any dead thatch—this will help the plants look tidier and even encourage new growth. Pruning any shrubs or plants with dead or scraggly branches is another good move. Removing dead material not only improves the appearance but also promotes healthier growth by allowing sunlight and air to reach the inner parts of the plant.

For a fresh layer of mulch, consider an organic option like Hardwood mulch, which helps retain moisture and keeps weeds down while enhancing the natural look of the area. Mulching will also create a unified, well-kept appearance that frames the flagpoles beautifully.

Adding new plants could be a great way to introduce colour and seasonal interest. Kangaroo paws, with their striking flowers and unique texture, would complement the existing plants well and bring a vibrant pop of colour. Other Australian natives like grevilleas, which come in a variety of sizes and colours, would blend in nicely while attracting native birds. If the area has good sun exposure, you might also consider adding some ground cover, like native violets, which provide subtle greenery without taking up too much space.

With a bit of trimming, tidying, and selective planting, you’ll transform the area into an inviting and colourful space.

Good Morning @rosey55 The Garden actually looks good , it really just needs a clean up. Pulling out any weeds and grass growing through it. I would keep it as an Australian Native Garden, adding native plants like Lomandra, small growers, ground cover like Grevillea Gin Gem or Myoporum.
There are a beautiful range of Australian Native plants in the Tucker Bush Range. If you have time, go and have a chat to the team in the Greenlife area at your local Bunnings store as they could suggest locally grown plants. I agree with Mitch’s advice. Good luck and keep in touch 🌿😀

@rosey55 @MitchellMc The 2nd photo looking at the garden from the road shows what a beautiful natural landscape you have there. Honestly just a clean up, even a layer of mulch added will help going in to the Summer months.
You could even add a birdbath to encourage the birds to come in for a drink. You could add a Gabion bench or stool for lizards to hide in the rocks. Or simply keep it natural.
