How to install trellis for star jasmine on brick wall?

Hi team, I would like to have metal trellis installation for star jasmine which I have planted along the red brick wall. The height of the red brick wall is 5.8 m x 1.4 m. It is the backyard wall against west sun direction. I would like to have at least 2m height as privacy screen. Do I need to extend the height of the fence  before installing trellis? Or it is possible to install the metal trellis against the brick wall without having any extension back panel above brick wall. I am just concern whether it is going to disturb the neighbour once jasmine grow beyond 1.4 metre height. Could you please give me some advice on this?

Re: trellis installation for star jasmine

Hi @Tina28,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is wonderful to have you with us.

Metal trellises are strong, but they can be bent relatively easily, and once your star jasmine grows in, there will be a fair bit of weight as well as a fair bit of surface area that will catch wind. If unsupported, the trellis will likely bend quite easily when wind gusts hit it.

If you are looking to install a trellis that extends 600mm above the height of the existing fence, you would need to add some structural extensions that extend above the wall..

You'd have to start by bolting some metal or timber posts to the brick wall using masonry anchors such as AnkaScrews.

Once those posts are in place, you can attach the metal trellis to them. This will transfer any wind loads applied to the trellis into those posts, which will then go down through the brick wall.

Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Re: trellis installation for star jasmine

Hi JacobZ,

Thanks for your suggestion. I am not quite clear whether you are advising to extend the brick wall with that post or to install the post from ground level in front of the brick wall. Which materials do you suggest to extend the brick wall. The post you mentioned is 1200mm x 1800 mm. I guess I won’t be able to extend the fence beyond 600mm which will make total 2m. But. as for trellis only I may be able to go higher than 2m. Are you suggesting me to install post of 2m height in front of brick wall. Which trellis do you recommend for jasmine climbing plants?

Re: trellis installation for star jasmine

Hello @Tina28

I believe JacobZ was referring to posts being anchored to your brick wall. An example would be the 70 x 35mm Outdoor Framing H3 Treated Pine - 2.4m possibly cut down to 2.0m to prevent going too tall. In regards to the trellis, have you considered perhaps something easy for the star jasmine to climb like the Rapid 1800 x 1200mm 100 x 50 x 5mm Galvanised Wire Mesh Panel or similar?

Let me tag @JacobZ just in case he has another idea in mind.

Re: trellis installation for star jasmine

Hi @Tina28,

I was suggesting attaching posts that extend 600mm above the top of the wall to the face of the wall.

The link I attached was a generic search for posts and was not intended to point to a single specific item, as our timber suppliers differ from location to location, making it difficult to pinpoint a specific product.

The timbers and the wire mesh panel @EricL has mentioned would work fine.
