Hello @Artiee
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about Peoney roses.
You're absolutely right, it’s much better to start with a bit of guidance than rely on luck. Let’s get your peony planted the right way.
From what you've described, the end that is woody is the root, and the other end with little pink coloured tips is where the shoots and flowers will grow. This means the woody part goes down into the soil, while the pink "eyes" or buds face upward. When planting in a warmer climate like yours in 4017 (Brisbane area), you should plant the peony so that the eyes are only about two to three centimetres below the surface of the soil. If they are planted too deep, they may not bloom properly.
Peonies usually prefer colder winters to thrive, but there are some varieties such as Itoh hybrids or Tree peonies that can perform better in warmer climates like Southeast Queensland. These types still need good drainage and plenty of sunlight, ideally full sun to part shade. It's also important to be patient, peonies can take a couple of seasons to really establish before flowering well.
Your idea of joining a garden circle is a fantastic one. Not only can it provide helpful advice and moral support, but it also allows you to share tools, seeds, and inspiration with others. Around Brisbane and the northern suburbs like Sandgate or Brighton, there are several community gardens and local gardening groups that welcome new members, especially beginners. A good place to start would be checking with your local library, community centre, or online groups in your area.
