How to prevent grass overtaking Buffalo lawn?

Hi there,

I have heard great things about the Bunnings workshop and the support team members provide, so thank you in advance for any assistance with my current issue concerning my buffalo lawn.

As you can see in the attached pictures, there seems to be a light green grass,

overtaking my lawn. I’ve tried to research it but can't seem to identify it accurately. Could someone please help me identify the type of weed and suggest a remedy?

This could be Cyperus rotundus, commonly known as nutgrass or nutsedge, which is a prevalent weed. Nutgrass is often mistaken for grasses like couch grass, but it has some distinctive features. One key characteristic is its unique triangular stem, which you can feel by rolling the stem between your fingers. The leaves of nutgrass are also arranged in a V-shape, with a stiffer, shinier appearance compared to couch grass.

Additionally, nutgrass produces small, dark tubers underground, often referred to as "nuts," which make it particularly difficult to control. These tubers allow the plant to regrow even after it’s been pulled out. If you find these tubers or notice the triangular stem, it’s likely that the plant is nutgrass. Due to its resilient tubers, controlling nutgrass typically requires persistent removal efforts or the use of targeted herbicides specifically designed for sedges.

I suggest having a look at Amgrow Sedgehammer 25g Lawn Herbicide to manage and control the infestation. Please remember to wear personal protection such as appropriate clothing, gloves, goggles and a mask when using this chemical.

Hi @maulik

To chime in with @EricL I think that looks like rye grass or winter rye grass which isnt as important as getting rid of it.

You have a very good investation so I think @EricL right about killing all the grasses in that zone. I might cover that area in black plastic so it helps kill any seeds for a week or two as well

Following that re planting sprigs of your buffalo lawn for faster re growth.

Good to tackle this asap especially before any new seeds start forming.

Optional Let it join fully with the buffalo for diverse grass types.

I'm not certain it is nutgrass, which usually has a wider leaf blade than is shown in your photos. Have you oversown your lawn with a seed blend to thicken it up? Lawn seed blends often contain other taller grasses that provide a mother crop to protect the couch seed until it germinates. This looks more like a ryegrass to me.

Looks more like a Rye Grass that has popped up over the Winter months.
