Hi, i live in the Dandenong Ranges. I have just started to plant vegetables. How do I protect this from, cockatoos, king parrots, bugs and winds?

Re: How to protect vegetable garden from pests?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @kelgan. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about vegetable gardens.

That’s a great start to your veggie garden! I’d suggest using some electrical conduit to create a simple hooped frame over your garden beds, then drape bird netting over the top. This will stop cockatoos and king parrots from getting to your crops while still letting in plenty of light and rain. Here's a wonderful project from @Grub80 with their Garden shade hoop house.

For bugs, it’s really a case-by-case situation. You can use natural-based sprays like eco-oil or pyrethrum periodically, but usually it’s best just to keep an eye on your plants and treat pests as they appear.

As for wind, that’s a bit trickier. Do you get strong winds often in your area? The best approach is to support your plants well with stakes, especially anything that grows tall, so they don’t snap in gusty weather. If wind is a major issue, you could look at adding a physical windbreak, like lattice or shadecloth, to help shield the garden.

Here's a helpful guide: How to protect crops from birds, rodents and weather.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
