How to remove grass & weeds?

Hello Team,

I need your guidance in removing the grass, weeds from the front/back yard soil without affecting/infecting the soil. I would like to grow plants on the soil, but the grass and weeds are really bothering and need advice to get rid of them permanently. Please refer to the pics and help me to resolve this.

Thanks

Balaji.

Re: How to remove grass & weeds

Hello @balaji27

It appears that your garden has been overrun with weeds, and I believe the long-term solution is consistent maintenance. That said, there are still effective steps you can take right now to clear out the existing grass and weeds without harming the soil, so you can prepare the area for healthy plant growth. From your photo, it looks like a mix of broadleaf weeds and invasive grasses are spreading, which can be particularly aggressive if not addressed early. Start by manually removing as many of the larger weeds as possible using a tool like the Cyclone Multi Surface Weeder Long Timber Handle or the Fiskars Xact Weed Puller from Bunnings, both of which help extract roots cleanly without turning the soil over too much.

For more stubborn patches, applying a natural, non-residual herbicide like Yates Nature’s Way Organic Weed Killer can help. It’s clove oil-based, fast-acting, and safe for garden beds where you plan to replant shortly after. If you're comfortable waiting a bit longer before planting and need something stronger, Yates Zero Weedkiller Super Concentrate is an option—it targets the roots effectively but won’t remain active in the soil. Always apply on a calm day to prevent overspray and follow label instructions carefully.

Once you’ve cleared the area, a thick layer of mulch is key to suppressing regrowth. Products like Richgro 40L Pine Bark Mulch or Cypress Mulch Blend from Bunnings work well for this, adding organic matter to the soil as they break down while also keeping weeds at bay. If you're not planting straight away, laying down a weed mat or biodegradable barrier adds an extra layer of protection.

By combining these steps with routine checks—like weekly weeding, mulching, and spot-treating—you’ll slowly turn things around. It takes patience, but with time your garden will become easier to manage and a lot more inviting for new plantings.

Please remember to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask when spraying your plants.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
