How to repair leaking garden tap?

Hello! I have a leaking tap and I'm struggling to find the best way to fix this.

I think the leak is coming from the tap value at the top, but, it seems like it might be a very old tap. The rubber value measures approx. 25mm (1 inch) and I cannot seem to find it anywhere within the Bunnings store. My alterative is to replace the entire tap but the inlet is also 25-26mm (1 inch) and I couldn't find anything in store (or maybe I've missed it). Anyone can help out here?

I had an unfortunate morning and I bent the pipe too trying to take out the tap head as I had my spanner on the pipe connector rather than the tap itself and bent the pupe. Anyone know if this is OK? I assume I don't need to repair this and my impact is slightly less water pressure?

Re: How to repair leaking garden tap?

Hi @Pete112,

To start, was the leaking water coming out the spout? If so, it would be the 25mm tap valve that needs replacing. If it were leaking out the handle sections theres a fibre washer and black O-ring on the spindle which would be the culprit there. 25mm sounds a bit large for a garden tap valve, but in anycase, it would normally be either the Kinetic 15mm Premium Brass Tap Valve, or, given your measurement, the Kinetic 20mm Brass Premium Tap Valve. The name "20mm" doesn't necessarily reflect the actual size of the washer, so it could be closer to 25mm.

With the bent pipe, you'd unlikely see a significant ddrop in pressure or flow. My only concern would be how badly you've crimped the wall and whether it has been weakened. If the bending has put a weak point in it you could find with continued use it developes a leak. Just keep an eye on it.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Yes, it is leaking from the top. Here is a photo.

This is the diameter of the tap value.

Would I still need the 20mm brass tap value, or do you suggest I replace the entire tap?

What would I need to buy to fix up the bent? Looking for a product that can join two copper pipes.

To add, the red/brown washer that sits between the body and top handle also looks worn. Any recommendation on washer to replace that too?

Would this work? Looks like it will come with the washer and value and a brand new spinner: https://www.bunnings.com.au/kinetic-20mm-brass-garden-tap-top-assembly_p4790545

Re: How to repair leaking garden tap?

Hi @Pete112

The leak you're experiencing is due to the black O-ring being perished on the spindle. That top assembly should work, but I'd take yours in with you to compare to ensure it suits.

For the pipe, there's not much you can do about that. The crimp/bend it in a difficult position. A plumber might be able to get a fitting on there, but chances are they'd need to replace the pipe going into the wall. They'll cut it behind the wall and extend a new piece of pipe out from behind.
