Morning planted my ornamental cherry blossom june/ july now oct had very few flowers on it at start of spring now very few leaves is this because it is new followed all instructions for planting using orhanic mulch etc Some advice would be appreciated
Hi @Cher54,
It sounds like your ornamental cherry blossom is still settling into its new environment. Since you planted it mid-year and it is now spring, it is normal for a young tree to produce fewer flowers and leaves in its first season as it focuses energy on establishing roots. New trees often have a “shock period” where flowering and leaf growth are limited, which should improve next year. Mulching and watering as you have done is ideal, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged to help roots establish. Sunlight is also important, as cherry blossoms need a full sun position to flower well. Light fertilising with a balanced fertiliser in early spring can promote healthy leaf and flower growth, but avoid heavy nitrogen as this encourages leaf growth over flowers. Overall, your tree is likely healthy and just adjusting, and with time and proper care, it should flower and leaf more vigorously in its second season.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Mitchell
Great thanks Mitchell. It does look healthy so hopefully next year will be better.
