How to stop Life on the Rocks plant dying?

I can’t seem to figure out why my plant is dying. I bought one for my dad about a year ago and it’s thriving and I bought one for myself a few months ago but this one is dying. I’m doing the same amount of watering as the one for my dad. The only difference is when i bought I dads one i bought it at a different plant shop and the roots were touching the water. With the one I bought from Bunnings the roots had been chopped off so it couldn’t touch the water. Now it’s dying. The roots aren’t even touching the rock either

I have no idea what to do and I need help.

I'm so sorry to hear about your plant. that must be frustrating.

These types of plants rely on their roots reaching down into the water to draw up moisture, so if the roots were cut or not in contact with the water from the start, the plant would have struggled to survive. It’s very possible the roots were already compromised before you bought it.

I’d recommend taking the plant back to your local Bunnings along with your receipt. Under our Perfect Plant Promise, we’ll be happy to swap it over for a new one. When choosing a replacement, just make sure the plant has healthy roots extending down into the water or sitting firmly on the rock surface, so it can get the moisture it needs to thrive.

and yeah I thought when I bought it the roots cut off was alarming. However my local Bunnings in Oxenford QLD had all of their life on the rocks roots cut off so they couldn’t reach the water. They also had no water in them.

unfortunately I don’t think I have the original receipt for the plant I purchased so I’m going to have to take that loss and probably buy another one. If I still see they are cutting the roots at my local Bunnings I may have to tell someone.

thankyou for your advice though. I had a feeling the roots being cut off from the start would have been the cause but I wanted to make sure there wasn’t something I was doing wrong.

Hi @jorjak,

Either the roots need to reach the water or they need to be firmly attached to the rock far enough down that the moisture the rock has wicked up touches them. Both will work. But, if the roots are not attached to moist rock or in the water, that's not great. I'll reach out to the team at the store to ensure that's not something they are doing there.

If you can find the transaction on a card, we can search it on our system in-store and bring up your receipt.

Hi @jorjak,

I've had a word with the Nursery team at Bunnings Oxenford, and they'd be more than happy to swap that plant over, regardless of having the receipt. They tell me the ones on the shelf now are beautiful and all their roots reach down into the water.

The team member there today is happy to do so, but they are also noting it in the team diary, so all the nursery team members are aware you'll be coming in.
