How to stop White Frangipani dying?

Hi All,

We would like to seek help from the expert minds in this forum, hoping to save our White Frangipan.

We have 2 White Frangipan in garden. Both of them are large, taller than 1 metre and they are under full sun exposure. Allow I name them for easier referral in this post, S for the sick one and H for the healthy one. H and S are next to each other (about 70cm apart.)

During last autumn, S start having yellow fallen leaves and soon after that only flowering, H have green leaves and flowering at the same time. H started to show white patch on the branches. I applied some Yates Rose Shield on S during winter.

As we just enter the warm season in Sydney, the White Frangipan start having green leave. But only for one of them. H started to have green leave (for 2+ weeks) but S is still bare. A few days ago, we observed that S has some flowering buds but still no leaf.

Based on your description and photos, it seems like the white patches on S are actually lichen, which is common on plants and trees in outdoor environments. Lichen doesn’t harm the plant itself, so there's no need to worry about that. The issue with S not producing leaves, while H is thriving, is likely related to a few different factors.

One potential reason for the lack of leaves on S could be environmental stress or health issues that have affected its ability to produce new growth. Given that S had yellowing leaves in autumn, this could indicate a possible nutrient imbalance or even water stress. Frangipanis do best with well-drained soil, so make sure the root zone of S is not staying too wet, as this can hinder leaf development.

There’s some damage to one of the branches, but it looks like it has calloused over and healed. This is a good sign as it shows the plant is trying to recover. However, if the damage was more extensive or occurred during the plant's growing season, it might have interfered with the plant's overall vitality, possibly contributing to the delay in new leaf growth.

Since H is doing well and right next to S, it’s likely not a major issue with soil or sunlight, so it may be worth inspecting the roots of S to check for any signs of root rot or stress. Also, consider applying a balanced fertiliser to help support new growth, and keep an eye on watering – Frangipanis don’t need too much water, especially during their dormant phases.

It's good to hear that S has some flowering buds, as that’s a positive sign. Keep monitoring the plant over the next few weeks, and you should hopefully see some new growth as the warmer weather continues.
