How to treat Buxus plant leaves turning yellow?

IMG_5340.jpeg

Buxus plant turning yellow from the side. Not sure what the reasoning could be.

I wasn’t watering the plant until recently. I have started watering weekly. This part of plant doesn’t get any rain either as there is a shade.

the front section as per the photo looks good. Can someone from the community please advise on possible cause and fix.

Re: Buxus plant leaves turning yellow

Hello @alimuhammed1

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about your Buxus plant.

Thanks for sharing the photo! Based on what you've described and what I can see, your Buxus (box hedge) is yellowing mostly on the side that's more shaded and sheltered from rain. This is a very common issue and is often linked to a few combined causes: lack of water, poor air circulation, and possible nutrient deficiencies. Since you weren’t watering until recently, the plant likely suffered drought stress on that side. Buxus plants have shallow roots, so even a few dry weeks can cause damage, especially where no rain reaches.

To help it recover, keep up with your weekly watering, making sure the water soaks down deeply rather than just wetting the surface. Adding a mulch like Oreco 26m2 Sweet Garden Sugar Cane Mulch

from Bunnings would be a great idea to help the soil stay moist longer. For nutrients, a gentle feed will help the plant bounce back; Yates Dynamic Lifter Organic Plant Food is a fantastic option and safe for Buxus. If you want a liquid option that acts faster, you could also use Seasol Complete Garden Health Treatment, which helps reduce stress and encourages new growth.

One extra tip: watch out for Buxus blight or fungal issues since shaded, damp spots can sometimes invite disease. It doesn’t look too bad in your photo, but if you notice black spots or a lot of leaf drop, you could spray with something like Yates Fungus Gun just in case.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Thanks a lot Eric.

Can I leave the yellow leaves as they are or would you recommend some trimming ?

Re: Buxus plant leaves turning yellow

Hello @alimuhammed1

Yes, it would be best to trim off any dead leaves or branches from the Buxus. Please remember not to over trim.
