How to treat Magnolia browning and spotted leaves?

Hi there,

I located this Magnolia on the side of the road and it is temporarily potted in a wine barrel with drainage holes. The barrel and plant receive about 5 hours of sunshine. We are located in South Australia.
Very recently I’ve noticed some browning leaves, brown spots and now these white spots too.
Any suggestions to keep this plant healthy?

Your magnolia is showing signs of leaf scorch and possible early fungal or bacterial issues, likely due to sun exposure, inconsistent watering, or transplant stress. The brown, dry patches on the leaves are typical of heat stress, especially in containers that dry out quickly. Since your plant is in a wine barrel and receives about five hours of sun, it may be getting too much direct afternoon light. Try moving it to a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade to reduce stress.

Watering is key, keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Check soil moisture daily during warm weather by feeling about 5cm deep. If it feels dry, give it a deep water and let excess drain freely. Avoid letting it dry out completely between waterings, as that can worsen leaf scorch.

The white and brown spots on the leaves suggest early signs of a fungal or bacterial leaf spot. Remove affected leaves and avoid overhead watering. Improve airflow by thinning out crowded leaves if needed. You can apply Yates Fungus Gun Ready To Use, which is safe for ornamental plants and effective against common fungal problems. Test it on a small area first to ensure the magnolia’s leaves don’t react.

In terms of nutrition, the magnolia may need a boost, especially if the potting mix is old. Apply Osmocote Plus Organics for Trees, Shrubs & Citrus, which feeds gradually and supports overall plant health. Top up the barrel with compost or mulch, keeping it a few centimetres away from the trunk to avoid rot. Mulch will also help maintain consistent moisture and soil temperature.

Once the plant stabilises, consider planting it in the ground in early autumn or late winter. Choose a spot with good drainage, morning sun, and protection from wind and afternoon heat.
