How to treat root damaged Lilly Pillys?

We had to remove some of our Lilly pillys during a patio renovation and the plants either side must have got root damage and as a result sections of the branches and leaves have died off. Pictures attached. Should I prune the dead branches off? If so is there a correct way to do this? Any other tips would be appreciated. Thanks

Pruning the dead branches is definitely the right step to help your Lilly Pillies recover from root damage. Use a pair of Fiskars X-series 26mm L Bypass Pruner, available at Bunnings, to make clean cuts just above healthy nodes. This will encourage new growth while preventing further dieback. If any branches are completely dead, follow them down to the main stem and remove them cleanly to avoid rot or pest issues.

Once pruned, your plants will need extra care to recover. Give them a deep watering and apply Seasol 1.2L Super Soil Wetter & Conditioner to reduce transplant shock and encourage strong root growth. For ongoing nutrition, feed them with Osmocote 2kg Native Controlled Release Fertiliser, which provides balanced nutrients over time and is safe for Australian natives like Lilly Pilly.

To improve soil moisture and protect the roots, add a 5-7cm layer of Cypress Mulch from Bunnings around the base of the plants, ensuring it doesn’t touch the stems. This will help retain moisture, regulate temperature, and improve soil structure. With regular watering, feeding, and some light pruning over the next few months, your Lilly Pillies should gradually recover.

Hi Eric, thanks for your detailed reply I feel much more confident now with what steps to take. How often should I use the controlled release fertiliser?

For Lilly Pilly, apply slow-release fertilizer every 3 to 6 months, depending on the product's formulation. If you want lush growth and vibrant foliage, supplement with liquid feed or seaweed solution every few weeks during the warmer months. Always water well after applying fertilizer to help nutrients absorb properly and prevent root burn.
