How to treat yellowing Buffalo lawn?

I have a buffalo turf lawn. About two weeks ago I noticed a large circle, perhaps 1 metre radius, of yellowing lawn. I tried to aerate and provide liquid Fertiliser over the entire lawn but it is slowly spreading.

there are still green roots amongst the drying parts but they seem tougher and more rooty.

Also where the lawn is green on the surface, underneath the grass is yellowing, that may be normal im not sure.

Your buffalo lawn seems to be under some stress, and the spreading yellow patches with tougher, root-like growth suggest a few possible causes. One of the most common issues is fungal disease, especially in humid or damp conditions. A circular pattern, along with toughened or drying grass, can indicate something like brown patch or fairy ring. Treating it with a fungicide such as Yates Mancozeb or Yates Anti-Rot Phosacid can help, and keeping up with regular mowing while avoiding excessive watering will improve airflow and prevent further spread.

Soil compaction or waterlogging could also be playing a role, especially if water isn’t soaking through properly. Aerating was a great step, but if the area stays too damp, the roots might be rotting. If that’s the case, improving drainage by continuing to aerate and lightly topdressing with sand should help.

Another possibility is a nutrient imbalance, which can cause yellowing and slow recovery. Since you've already used a liquid fertiliser, switching to a balanced slow-release option like Scotts Lawn Builder or Munns Professional 10kg Buffalo Booster Lawn Fertiliser might give better long-term results.

Lawn grubs are also worth checking for, as they feed on roots and can cause thinning or yellowing. Lifting a small section of turf should reveal if any white curl grubs are present. If they are, treating with Richgro Lawn Beetle & Grub Killa will help get them under control.

Since the yellowing is spreading despite fertilising, I suspect a fungal issue is the likely cause, I propose trying a fungicide first as a first approach. Keeping an eye on moisture levels, continuing aeration, and ensuring good airflow will all help your lawn recover and stay healthier in the long run.
